Description: Members of the Grammy award-winning South African gospel group the Soweto Gospel Choir will perform a live in-store concert Thursday, February 4 at noon at the Portland Bull Moose at 151 Middle Street.
Scheduled in conjunction with Portland Ovations who will be presenting a full concert of the Soweto Gospel Choir at Merrill Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. that evening, the free in-store concert will feature ten members performing three songs a capella followed by a CD signing.
Formed in Soweto, South Africa in 2002, the 30+ member ensemble blends elements of African gospel, reggae, and American popular music. The group’s albums, Blessed and African Spirit won Grammy awards for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
“We are thrilled to have the Soweto Gospel Choir perform in our store as part of a warm-up to their show at Merrill Auditorium that night,” notes Bull Moose’s Jim Pinfold. “This group has performed for everyone ranging from Nelson Mandela to audiences at the Oscars. They really are a powerful expression of hope. An entire generation was turned on to South African choral music back on Paul Simon’s Graceland more than twenty years ago… It is as astonishing today as it was upon first encounter.”
