On Sunday, June 1, 1817 – just three months after his inauguration as fifth president – 59-year-old James Monroe and a small entourage embarked on a tour of the northern states. In mid-July Monroe made it to Maine!
In commemoration of this historic tour, join us at Maine Historical Society in collaboration with Greater Portland Landmarks, for an interview with “Monroe” followed by a short walking tour of the neighborhood focusing on Monroe’s visit to Portland. The evening ends at the Portland Observatory for “cameras and conversation” – have your photo taken with the President, ask questions, and enjoy refreshments, as well as the views from the Observatory.
$15 MHS and GPL Members; $20 general admission. Space is limited.
