Eastern Cemetery is 350 years old this year and we are celebrating with a free open house. Peaks Island stonecutter Matt Barnes of Yankee Slate Cutting will be there, demonstrating the art of carving slate gravestones by hand, using methods of the 1700s. Learn how some of our oldest gravestones were made.
Throughout the open house we will be offering free tours and our trained volunteers will be demonstrating their conservation methods for repairing and restoring gravestones.
Tours start at the gate to Eastern Cemetery at 224 Congress Street. Visit SpiritsAlive.org/tours for more information. Event sponsored by Spirits Alive, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of historic Eastern Cemetery. Event is free and donations are gratefully accepted.
