The holidays are fast approaching — and once again we’re inviting all downtown businesses to be a part of Light Up Your Holidays! This series of fun-filled, family-friendly events brings thousands into the city to explore, shop, and celebrate. From traditional favorites like the Monument Square Tree Lighting to newer events like Elfternoon, we’re pleased to offer an exciting array of opportunities that will engage & delight your clients & customers.
Please review our full line-up of events below and complete the online registration form no later than November 8th. As always, participating businesses will be highlighted in Portland Downtown’s print, digital, and social promotions throughout the season.

Monument Square Tree Lighting
Friday, November 29 • 4:30-6:30pm
A traditional downtown favorite featuring family-friendly activities and live music. With over 4,000 expected, downtown will be hopping before and after the event.
Shop For A Cause Day — Register for this event below
Saturday, November 30 • All Day
Encourage your customers to shop local, give back, and make a difference this holiday season. As a participating location, a portion of your sales will benefit Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center. Please note: your business does not have to be a retail store to participate in Shop For A Cause. Restaurants, museums, hotels, and other businesses can join the fun – get creative!
Holiday Window Display Contest — Register for this event below

Show your spirit and let your creativity shine! Deck out your window for a chance to win some awesome prizes including our Grand Prize: a $1,000 advertising contract with Portland Press Herald. The categories are: Best Overall, Best Use of Merchandise, Most Original, Best Theme, and Community Choice.
Elfternoon — Register for this event below
Three Wednesdays — Dec 4, Dec 11, and Dec 18 • 12-2pm
Now in its fifth year, Elfternoon is a series of shopping days with a delicious twist. From noon to 2pm on each Elfternoon day, participating locations treat their customers to complimentary nibbles and refreshments. Shoppers hop from store to store, checking off their holiday to-do list — all while enjoying tasty treats. Please note: your business does not have to be a retail store to participate in Elfternoon. Restaurants, museums, hotels, and other businesses can join the fun – get creative!
Merry Madness — Register for this event below
Thursday, December 5 • Kickoff Party 4-7pm; Participating locations stay open until 10pm
Portland’s biggest night of shopping kicks off at the U.S. Custom House, where ticket holders pick up their commemorative Merry Madness wine glass and shopping bag. After enjoying live music and complimentary snacks, shoppers head out to shop ‘til they drop! Participating locations stay open late — until 10pm — so that residents & visitors can enjoy an unforgettable holiday shopping experience in downtown Portland.
Horse & Wagon Rides
November 29 – December 22 (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays)
Enchanting fun for the whole family. Pick up and drop off every half hour in Monument Square. Hours: Fridays 4-8pm, Saturdays 2-6pm, Sundays 1-5pm.
First Friday Art Walk
Friday, December 6 • 5-8pm
Always a big hit, First Friday celebrates our vibrant downtown arts scene. Visitors enjoy free self-guided tours of art galleries, art studios, museums, and alternative art venues. This event is managed by Creative Portland.
